Volunteer Guardianship

Guardians represent the elderly, developmentally disabled and persons with other incapacities, who have been determined by the court, to be mentally incapable of caring for their own person and/or property.  Guardians are appointed by the court and receive training and on going assistance through Guardianship Assistance Program (GAP) at Kenosha Human Development Services (KHDS).  Usually a family member or a friend is the court appointed guardian for an individual.  However, many disabled adults have no family or friends who are able or willing to take this role.

The KHDS GAP is committed to recruiting volunteers to act as guardians for individuals who have been determined incapable of handling their own affairs and have no family or friends to look out for their best interests.  Our goal is to develop and maintain a pool of trained volunteer guardians, who are available for appointment with people as the need arises.

Responsibilities of a Guardian

  1. Supervise, protect and coordinate services with social workers on behalf of the individual ward.

  2. Make periodic contacts (preferably once a month) to ensure proper care and treatment of the ward.

  3. Act as an advocate and authorize specific medical care and release of information as needed.

  4. Make annual report to the court regarding condition of the ward and annual accounting if finances are handled.

  5. Work with placement staff in determining the least restrictive environment for the ward.  Also work with social workers to apply for services and funding programs on behalf of the ward.
